Large Japanese black lacquer carte album with intricate mother-of-pearl and bone Shibayama inlay depicting birds flying towards a hanging plant container with blooming peonies. The plant hangs from a blossom tree. The scene is surrounded by an decorative blue/green mother-of-pearl meander rim.

The album holds nine plates each lined with hand painted silk. The plates can hold 30 carte-de-cabinet photos and 18 carte-de-visite photos and each feature their own hand painted design; foliage with blooming flowers, insects and birds, or serene views of Japanese traditional style villages near water. The last on even shows a view on Mount Fuji.

The first plate is inscribed ‘Souvenir de notre voyage en Chine -1918. Témoignage de notre affection. Maurice-Nadia’, translated: ‘Memories of our trip to China – 1918. Testimony of our affection. Maurice-Nadia’
