A fine pair of black lacquer square wooden hokai 外居 (covered shell container) with facetted corners. The removable cover is decorated with a gold lacquer mon 紋 (crest) depicting four open squares 目結 (meyui). With ribbed sides, supported on four tall spreading feet, and the edges and feet with shaped copper fittings engraved with a scrolling foliage and circle motif. It has a black lacquer interior.
One lid with several restorations around the sides. The container and the other hokai are in a very good condition with some signs of age and wear.

Late Edo period – First half 19th century
Hokai boxes are traditionally used in Japan to store and carry shells for Kai-awase game in Edo and Meiji Period.
