Large food container

Beautiful large black lacquer dome-shaped jikirô 食籠 (ceremonial food container) with a fitted lid and raised on a pedestal foot. The exterior is all-over decorated with golden maki-e (lacquer design) of crests 紋 (mon) depicting three arched triangles in a circle, surrounded by scrolling foliage (karakusa) with blooming cherry blossoms 桜 (sakura).

The entire interior is executed with a nice even layer of red lacquer.

Height 29.5 cm, Diameter 36.1 cm

Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period).

The container is in a good original condition with traces of age and wear. Lid with hairline of 14 cm. Container with two rim chips. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.

Lacquer food containers like this one were presented by wealthy families at weddings or other important occasions. They would have contained delicacies appropriate to the season.
