Elegant square black lacquer 蝋色漆 (roiro’urushi) jûbako 重箱 (picnic box) with four trays and a cover with rounded corners. Decorated all around with different tones of gold and silver hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief design) of a luscious chrysanthemum 菊 (kiku) garden with a bamboo fence. Some of the cores are inlaid with a piece of mother-of-pearl 螺鈿 (raden). Between the flowering bunches of chrysanthemums you can also see a few star-shaped kikyô 桔梗 (bell flowers).
The back of the cover, which is surprisingly heavy, is decorated with a young pine tree and plum blossom design.
The rims of the trays are accentuated by gold lacquer. The sides of the interior are lacquered with a nice warm layer of nashiji 梨子地, and the bottom with a layer of red speckles on a black background.
The jûbako is in a fair condition. There are different kinds of imperfections related to water damage. At first sight these are not that noticeable due to the lovely full decoration. Please have a close look at the photos for a clear condition reference.
