Alluring large and heavy black lacquer dome-shaped jikorô (ceremonial food container) with a fitted lid and raised on a pedestal foot. The lid is decorated with a large gold lacquer crest depicting a wood sorrel in a circle 丸に酢漿草紋 (maru ni karabami mon).
The entire interior is lacquered with a nice even layer of red lacquer.

Period: Meiji period – 19th century

The container is in a good condition with some traces of age and wear. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.

Including red lacquer wooden tomobako 供箱 (storage box).

Lacquer food containers like this one were presented by wealthy families at weddings or other important occasions. They would have contained delicacies appropriate to the season.
