Very rare square granite water basin (suibachi); On each corner there is a carved effigy of an elephant head with its trunk, On each side there is a seated Buddha-figure in “gasshō” position, used for greeting, with the palms together and fingers pointing upwards in prayer position; used in various Buddhist traditions. Usually these kind of water stones are placed near a inner entrance of a temple or shrine. Waterstone with Buddha images are rare, but this example with the elephant heads we have never seen in real neitherr in books or anyother source. For sure this piecde is from the Edo Period. The age of these granite statues is difficult to determine. We can establish this example has been hand-cut because of the soft outline. Also one can see the impact of being outside and the influence of weather elements for multiple centuries. Therefore looking at this piece it is very well possible it was created could be much earlier then 200 – 300 years. But again it is impossible to proof.
