Lovely and completely restored kôdansu 小箪笥 (small cabinet of drawers) in one section. Fully restored, cleaned and waxed.

The drawer faces are made of indigenous kiri (paulownia) wood, and the exterior of hinoki cypress wood. The entire outside is varnished in a sought after warm brown hue, a colour that we like to call ‘golden oak’.

Configured with 6 drawers of different size. Equipped with slender ‘kushigata’-shaped patinated copper bail handles and small circular lock plates. The drawers run very smoothly. A lovely cute cabinet with lots of convenient storage space.
The sides fitted with a pair of sturdy iron handles (totte).

In a very good completely restored condition. Two lock mechanisms missing. Please see the photos for a condition reference. No keys included.

Paulownia was the desired wood for the construction of tansu such as these to safely store kimono during the changing Japanese seasons. The characteristic of this wood allowed for its expansion during humid summer months to seal the drawers and keep the silk kimono dry while during dry winter months, the wood contracted to allow the kimono to circulate air to breath.
