Rare and large red lacquered trunk from Ryūkyū Islands (Okinawa), decorated with Chinese style designs of cranes standing on turtles in a Japanese apricot and bamboo landscape.
Its corners strengthened with metal fittings and a large square key-plate.
Three of the four sides are decorated with the same design as the top.
Inside black lacquered with an extra tray.
These chests were part of the dowry of women. Late Edo period.
