Tall and fantastic wooden Kansai 関西 chôba’dansu 帳場箪笥 (merchant’s document cabinet) in two sections. Fully restored, cleaned and waxed.

The drawer fronts are made of indigenous kiri (paulownia) wood, and the exterior of hinoki cypress wood. It is varnished in a sought after warm brown hue, a colour that we like to call ‘golden oak’.

The upper part constructed with a pair of sliding doors constructed with burl wood panels with a striking natural woodgrain, and five drawers in two sizes. The sliding doors are fitted with oval patinated metal thumb grips with an intricate engraved design.

The lower part constructed with three full-width drawers, two medium-sized drawers, a small drawer and a hinged door heavily clad with iron. Two more small drawers behind this door.
The drawers are equipped with sturdy hand-forged iron ‘mokkô’-shaped bail handles with oblong escutcheons. The lower drawers fitted with circular lock plates fitted with raised knobs in the shape of chrysanthemum flower heads (kiku).

This type of cabinet originates from Kyôto/Kansai area.

Period: Japan- Meiji period (1868-1912).

The chôba’dansu is in a very good restored condition. The drawers and sliding doors run very smoothly. There is a lot of volume for easy storage. Locking mechanism missing from the hinged door. Please see the photos for a condition reference. No keys included
