Charming Matsumoto ishô’dansu 衣装箪笥 (cabinet of drawers) in a single section, with a great aged patina.
Fully restored, cleaned and waxed.

It features a distinctive appearance with its dark red Shunkei-style lacquer, subtly revealing the underlying wood grain. The cabinet is crafted from durable hinoki cypress wood for the drawer faces and indigenous sugi (cedar) wood for the frame.

The cabinet includes seven differently sized drawers, each fitted with large circular black iron lock plates, accented with brass wire rims, and robust iron ‘warabite’-shaped bail handles with matching elongated escutcheons.
For ease of transport, each side is equipped with an iron ‘pole carrying’ bail handle and two en-suite totte (grip handles).

This type of cabinet originates from Matsumoto city, located in former Shinano Province and was the provincial capital from the Heian period onwards.

Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912).

It is in a very good restored condition with some minimal traces of wear conform age. For a clear condition reference, please look at the photos.
