Well-made, rustic wooden ishô’dansu 衣装箪笥 (cabinet of drawers) in two sections. Fully cleaned and waxed.

Constructed of indigenous kiri (paulownia) wood with traces of a brown lacquer finish and a great aged patina.

The upper part constructed with two drawers, and the lower part with two drawers of different size and a hinged door, opening to two more drawers.

The drawers are equipped with decorative hand-forged iron arrow-shaped lock plates fitted with a raised knob formed like a chrysanthemum 菊 (kiku). Flanked by sturdy iron ‘hirute’-shaped bail handles set on oblong escutcheons.
The drawers offer ample depth and volume for convenient storage and glide smoothly for easy use.

For added practicality, both sections have “pole carrying” handles to facilitate easy transport and secure the upper section in place. The lower section is further enhanced with a pair of ‘warabite’-shaped totte (grip handles) on each side.

Period: Japan – Late Edo period (First half 19th century).

Height 105.6 (T&B 52.8 cm), Width 87.6 cm, Depth 42.3 cm.

The ishô dansu is in a very good original condition with traces of wear conform use and age, appealing to their rustic appearance. No keys included. For a clear condition reference, please look at the photos.
