Restored large wooden kimono ishô dansu

Price:  1.700,00

Unique and completely restored large wooden kimono ishô dansu 着物衣装箪笥 (cabinet of drawers for kimono) in two sections with outstanding lacquered rims and hardware. Fully restored, cleaned and waxed.

A feature you don’t come across that often is that the refined hardware and horizontal rims of the cabinet are lacquered in crimson red with a ‘wear’-design in black, green, and white.
The cabinet is made of kiri 桐 (paulownia) wood. Slightly varnished, giving it a tad darker hue.

The upper part has a pair of sliding doors, underneath which three small adjacent drawers, and two large stacked drawers. The interior with a shelf on the left side, and an open space and drawer on the right.
The lower section has four large stacked drawers.

The sliding doors have lovely chrysanthemum-shaped round thumb grips. All the drawers are equipped with refined ‘mokkô’-shaped bail handles with matching ornamented backplates. In the middle of the drawers a small circular lock plate. The drawers are very deep and have a lot of volume, for easy storage. They run very smoothly as well.

The kimono cabinet is in a very good completely resorted condition with some traces of wear along the lacquer rims. Please look at the photos for a condition reference. No keys included.

Tansu is the traditional mobile storage cabinetry indigenous to Japan. Tansu were rarely used as stationary furniture. Consistent with Japan’s minimalist aesthetic, traditional homes appeared rather empty. Tansu were not visible in the home except at certain times for specific situations. They were kept in kura (storehouses) adjacent to homes or businesses, in nando (storage rooms), in oshiire (house closet alcoves), on choba (raised platform area of a shop) and on some sengokubune (coastal ships). Mobility was obtained through the use of attached wheels, iron handles for carrying or protruding structural upper rails for lifting. (From Wikipedia)
