This tansu is a traditional Japanese storage cabinetry specially designed to store kimono. It has the typical Japan’s minimalist aesthetics, and fits perfect in our now more modern households. As the drawers are very deep and have a lot of volume, it is perfect for easy storage.
Paulownia was the desired wood for the construction of tansu such as these to safely store kimono during the changing Japanese seasons. The characteristic of this wood allowed for its expansion during humid summer months to seal the drawers and keep the silk kimono dry while during dry winter months, the wood contracted to allow the kimono to circulate air to breath.
