Tall bronze floor-lamp column

Impressive, very tall and ornamented bronze floor-lamp column with a dark brown patina decorated with a refined and detailed relief design.

The top is shaped like a taiko drum 太鼓 with an intricate meander design. The Thunder God Raijin 雷神 hangs from one side of the drum (his attribute), still trying to catch his brother Fujin 風神 (God of Wind), who has just fallen far down below, all the way through the wild thunderstorm (shown on the column), into the raging sea.
The segmented base with lanes of different repetitive motifs of taiko drums, temple lions and petals.

Period: Japan – Around 1880 (Meiji period).

In a very good original condition with minimal traces of age. Two small dents in the foot. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.

Raijin and Fujin are among the most feared and respected Japanese deities. These two gods are the masters of lightning and storms, two devastating meteorological phenomena in a country regularly hit by typhoons.
