Pair of candlesticks 燭台 (shokudai)
Price on request
A handsome pair of Japanese silver-plated copper candlesticks 燭台 (shokudai), finely decorated throughout with an intricate chrysanthemum design 菊 (kiku).
Each candlestick is of traditional tall form, resting on a broad domed foot rising to a slender column with a gently swelling centre. The upper section terminates in a en-suite chrysanthemum shaped drip pan surmounted by an openwork candle support and central pricket.
The entire surface is richly worked with densely arranged chrysanthemums and foliage, executed in a combination of engraving, chasing and hammered detail. The floral decoration continues uninterrupted across the domed bases, stems and upper bowls, giving the pair a particularly unified appearance. The stems rise from tiered, petal-shaped mounts with contrasting copper-coloured details.
Constructed from copper and finished with silver plating. Through age and handling, areas of the underlying copper have become visible, creating an attractive warm patina and subtle variation in colour.
Complete with their original wooden storage box 供箱 (tomobako), signed and sealed ‘Kochiroku’ 吉六. Small imprint on the box of a kamon 家紋 (family crest).
Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868–1912).
Dimensions:
Height 56 cm; Diameter 22 cm each.
Considering their age, the candlesticks are in very good antique condition with traces of wear consistent with age and use. There is some rubbing and wear to the silver plating, together with minor areas of oxidation and verdigris, contributing to an attractive aged patina. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition.
When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
