Very large patinated bronze figure depicting the three-headed serpent king Muchilinda protecting the seated Buddha Shakyamuni from heavy rains. Also known as ‘Naga Buddha’.

Shakyamuni holding its hands in the Bhumisparsha Mudra, representing the moment of the Buddha’s awakening as he claims the earth as the witness of his enlightenment.
Seated in padmasana on the curled snake body of the naga (great snake).

The serpent king’s heads exhibit intricate detailing, adorned with lavish crowns. Their expressions appear highly vigilant, with open mouths baring fangs in a hissing manner towards the observer. Notably, the central head features a three-pointed tongue extending outward.

Period: Nepal – First half 20th century.

Weight 29 kg.

In a good original condition. Composed of various separate parts; base, buddha and serpent king. Old defect of the tail end. Few bolt missing. Please have a good look at the photos for a clear condition reference.
