Exceptional, large black lacquer zushi 厨子 ( traveling shrine with double doors) holding three very detailed carved Buddhistic figures: prominent in the middle stands the ‘Eleven-headed Kannon’ 十一面観音 (Jûchimen Kannon), the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Kannon is also better known as the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara.

Jûichimen Kannon (“Eleven-headed Kannon”), is an important bodhisattva in the Esoteric schools of Buddhism. Atop the deity’s own head are eleven additional heads. Ten of these take the form of bodhisattvas and represent the ten stages toward enlightenment. The topmost head is that of Amida (Sanskrit: Amitabha), the Buddha from whom Kannon emanates. (From The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York).

The bodhisattva is portrayed with sixteen pairs of hands in various positions, mudra’s, and some holding attributes.
Behind Kannon is a golden mandorla with a swirling cloud design. In the centre an dharmachakra (wheel of the law).

Kannon is protected by two guardians; on the left stands one of the ‘Four Heavenly Kings’ 四天王 (Shitenô) holding up one hand high (were there used to be a attribute/weapon) and standing on a figure, on the right Fudô Myôô 不動明王, with large red flames behind him and holding a pendant on a rope.

The interior of the shrine is lacquered with gold leaf, and the exterior is lacquered black with an arched roof ending pagoda-shaped points.

Height 45.1 cm, Width 32.3 cm, Depth 15.2 cm.
Height Kannon 23.5 cm.
Edo Period (1600-1868).
Considering its age the shrine is in a very good condition. Some to be expected traces of age and wear, mainly on the outside. Please take a close look at the photos for a condition reference.

Kannon is one of Asia’s and Japan’s most beloved deities. Kannon worship remains non-denominational and widespread. S/he appears in countless forms throughout Japan to assist with all manner of earthly petitions and to protect all those trapped in the six realms of karmic rebirth, especially the human realm.
