A fine large porcelain lavishly decorated Kutani Shi Shi lion. The lion has a fierce look and rests with it’s paw on a tama 玉 (ball). On the front a large peony flower”botan” a symbol of bravery, honor and good fortune, and all over decorated with flowers and buddhist symbols. The Shi Shi is elegantly decorated with gold lustre.

As a part of Buddhist symbolism the open mouth is meant to be forming the sound “a” あ, symbolic of all beginnings.

The Shi Shi is marked on the bottom 九谷 (Kutani) and 太吉 (Takichi).
Next to the kanji marks, it is dated Shôwa 58.
