Gilded wooden figure of the deity Daikokuten 大黒天 performing a traditional lion dance 獅子舞 (shishimai). Blissfully he dances with a large lion mask 獅子頭 (shishi’gashira) on his head, his mallet in one hand and an open fan in the other.

Period: Japan – Late Meiji period – Taishô period (Early 20th century).

Daikokuten (大黒天) is a syncretic Japanese deity of fortune and wealth, one of the Seven gods of Fortune 七福神 (Shichifukujin). Daikokuten originated from Mahākāla, the Buddhist version of the Hindu deity Shiva, conflated with the native Shinto god Ōkuninushi (From Wikipedia).
