Siddhartha Gautama is most commonly referred to as the Buddha (“the awakened”). Here he is depicted just after his birth. According to legend, the Buddha was born in the garden of Lumbini on the southern fringe of present-day Nepal. Straight after birth, he took seven steps, pointed upward and downward, and said, “I am alone in heaven and on earth.” These steps represent seven directions—north, south, east, west, up, down, and here. Then nine dragons descended from heaven and “baptized” him with pure water.

In Japan on the 8th of April the birth of Buddha is celebrated. One of the traditions is placing such a figure on an elevated stand within a basin on an altar. People approach the altar, fill a ladle with water or tea, and pour it over the figure to “wash” the baby. Commemorating the moment of the dragons baptizing the Buddha.
