A large and impressive Japanese hanging court or shrine drum 釣り太鼓 (tsuri’daiko), mounted within an elaborate black lacquered wooden frame with gilded and gilt-metal decoration.
The circular frame is crowned by a large gilded flame-shaped ornament 火焔 (kaen), worked in relief with dense scrolling cloud motifs and surrounded by a radiating border of stylised flames. The frame itself is black lacquered with gilt rims and applied gilt-metal fittings decorated with scrolling foliage and floral motifs.
The suspended drum 太鼓 (taiko) is decorated on both faces with a lively polychrome composition of three Buddhist guardian lions 獅子 (shishi), intertwined with long flowing red ribbons against a gold lacquered ground. The broad sides of the drum are further embellished with scrolling flowering vines in soft polychrome colours against a gilded surface. The drum skins are secured by a double row of raised gilt studs.
The drum is suspended from the frame and accompanied by a pair of lacquered wooden strikers 撥 (bachi). Purple silk agemaki 揚巻 decorative knots with long tassels hang from either side of the frame.
The whole is supported on a substantial black lacquered stand with gilded outlines and four spreading warabite-shaped feet.
